Fort Bend County Libraries Launch New Online Catalog & Network September 2
After six months without an online catalog or computer access, Fort Bend County Libraries are turning the page with a fresh chapter in library technology. Beginning September 2, the library system will unveil a state-of-the-art network, a fully cloud-based catalog, and improved computer and printing services, bringing back – and expanding – resources that thousands of residents depend on every day.
The network outage, which began February 24, affected not only the online catalog but also computers, printing, phone service, and email. According to Fort Bend County Libraries, no patron information was compromised during the outage. The disruption, however, created an opportunity for a complete transformation of the system.
A Stronger, Safer, and Smarter System
The upgraded system includes brand-new servers, advanced security tools, and modern network hardware designed to provide faster, more reliable access for years to come. Library users can once again search the catalog, place holds, check out books, and use self-check stations with confidence.
The replacement of computers across all locations is ongoing, so availability may be limited at first. Still, each branch already offers Internet access, printing, and free WiFi. A new mobile app will also launch alongside the catalog, giving patrons convenient access to catalog searches and holds, with more features rolling out in the coming months.

More Books, More Services, More Possibilities
During the downtime, staff continued ordering materials, which means thousands of new titles are hitting shelves this fall. Residents will also see the debut of new services such as Wonderbooks for kids, Kanopy+ streaming, and PressReader digital newspapers.
Later this fall, George Memorial Library in Richmond will launch a new “Library of Things,” allowing residents to check out items beyond books. Popular support programs like “Teacher in the Library” (for grades 3–6) return September 2 at George Memorial, Mission Bend, and Missouri City branches. The “Lawyer in the Library” program also continues at the Willie Melton Law Library.
Access has been restored to LinkedIn Learning for Libraries and The Wall Street Journal, while existing digital users may need to update their settings in apps such as OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla.
Fine Forgiveness and Fall Activities
Overdue fines were waived during the outage, and items checked out before September 1 will continue to be fine-free through November 30. Regular checkout policies and fines resume September 2 for new items.
Children’s programs are also resuming their fall schedule, and all branches will continue to host free events and activities for teens, adults, and families.
To celebrate, libraries will host special events and giveaways throughout the week, culminating in a Re-Launch Party on Saturday, September 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at George Memorial Library in Richmond. The event will feature sweet treats, fun activities, and limited-edition library cards designed by winners of the Library Card Sign-Up Month contest.
