MD Anderson Cancer Center Ranks No. 1 in the Nation for Cancer Care for 11th Consecutive Year

July 29 2025

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has once again been recognized as the No. 1 hospital for cancer care in the U.S. News & World Report 2025-2026 “Best Hospitals” survey. This marks the 11th year in a row that MD Anderson has held the top spot and continues a remarkable track record of consistently ranking among the top two cancer care hospitals since the survey began in 1990.

Commitment to Patients and Families

“We are honored to again be ranked as the nation’s top hospital for cancer care – a recognition that reaffirms our commitment to our shared mission to end cancer,” said Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “We are grateful to every one of our teammates, trainees, students, donors, volunteers, advocates and patients, whose unwavering dedication make it possible for MD Anderson to deliver outstanding patient care.”

The 2025-2026 rankings also highlighted MD Anderson’s achievements in other medical specialties: No. 1 in Ear, Nose & Throat, No. 5 in Urology, and No. 13 in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery. The cancer center also received High Performing Ratings for adult procedures and conditions, including colon cancer surgery, gynecological cancer surgery, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma treatment, lung cancer surgery, and prostate cancer surgery. These ratings highlight strong performance in specialized cancer treatment as well as related complex surgeries and therapies associated with improved survival and quality of life outcomes.

Recent Breakthroughs

In July 2025, MD Anderson reported a series of significant research and treatment milestones. These included:

  • Identifying KRAS co-mutations that help certain lung cancer treatments work better.
  • Discovering genetic risks linked to chemotherapy that may lead to secondary cancers.
  • Validating new-onset diabetes as an early warning sign of pancreatic cancer.
  • Restoring p53 function in TP53-mutant acute myeloid leukemia, a genetic breakthrough in blood cancers.
  • Finding new treatment targets for ovarian cancer and low platelet disorders.
  • Advancing bacterial-immunotherapy combinations for patients with treatment-resistant solid tumors.

One major clinical highlight was a four-year follow-up showing 87% survival and 80% disease-free rates for advanced melanoma patients treated with pre-surgical immunotherapy. Another discovery linked the PPP2R1A mutation to better survival rates in ovarian and other cancers. These findings are shaping treatment options not only in Houston but around the world.

Eight Decades of Leadership

Founded in 1941, MD Anderson’s sole mission has been to “eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world.”Over more than 80 years, it has become a global hub for patient care, cancer research, prevention, and education.

MD Anderson’s facilities extend beyond its main campus in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, forming one of the largest and most advanced cancer treatment networks in the world. The institution operates:

  • Specialized outpatient clinics for different cancer types and treatment needs.
  • Inpatient hospital facilities equipped for advanced surgical and medical care.
  • A Proton Therapy Center, among the most advanced radiation therapy facilities in the nation.
  • Research laboratories that drive innovative cancer discoveries.
  • Patient support and education centers designed for both treatment and prevention.

Additionally, MD Anderson has multiple regional care centers across the Greater Houston Area, including locations in The Woodlands, Sugar Land, League City, Northwest Houston, and West Houston, bringing expert cancer care closer to where patients live and work. These regional centers expand access to consultations, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and follow-up care, reinforcing MD Anderson’s reach and commitment to serving diverse communities throughout the region.

The hospital’s multidisciplinary approach means patients receive care from teams of experts—including oncologists, nurses, surgeons, therapists, and support staff—who work together to create personalized treatment plans.

Recognition Beyond Rankings

In addition to U.S. News & World Report’s top ranking, MD Anderson has earned:

  • A five-star rating in Vizient’s 2024 Quality and Accountability scorecard.
  • The title of Top Hospital for Oncology in Newsweek’s 2025 World’s Best Specialized Hospitals rankings.
  • Six consecutive Magnet designations from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, including its first Magnet with Distinction rating in June 2025, making it one of only 26 hospitals worldwide with such a record of nursing excellence.

“The consistent recognition MD Anderson receives for the quality of compassionate, evidence-based care we provide is an enduring testament to our incredible staff and to those we serve,” Pisters said. “We are deeply appreciative of our tremendous team as well as thousands of friends, community supporters and collaborators, for their dedication to every patient and family member affected by cancer.”

A Future Focused on Ending Cancer

For more than eight decades, MD Anderson has been at the forefront of global cancer care and research, and this year’s top ranking once again highlights its leadership and commitment to excellence. Patients, families, and communities worldwide look to MD Anderson for hope, healing, and innovation.
