Soft Opening of Fort Bend County’s Pecan Grove Sports Hub Marks New Chapter in Community Wellness, Inclusion, and Resilience

August 18 2025

A new era for Fort Bend County recreation begins this week as the County hosts a soft opening for the Pecan Grove Sports Hub—a newly renovated, multi-purpose facility in Richmond that has quickly become a hub for fitness, inclusion, and emergency preparedness.

The event will be held Friday, August 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pecan Grove Multi-Purpose Gymnasium, located at 727 Plantation Dr., Richmond, TX 77406. Residents are encouraged to attend and explore the updates and future potential of a space already making a significant impact in the community.

A Growing Legacy of Community Investment

Since its phased activation earlier this year, the Pecan Grove Sports Hub has already welcomed more than 21,000 visitors, hosting pickleball, basketball, and volleyball games inside its expansive, climate-controlled walls. But the Sports Hub is more than just a gym—it’s part of Fort Bend County’s broader effort to create resilient, inclusive community spaces.

"Even before the official ribbon-cutting, this facility has become a destination for neighbors to connect, compete, and recharge,” said Judge KP George, who will speak at Friday’s event alongside Commissioner Vincent Morales (Precinct 1) and representatives from Fort Bend County Parks & Recreation.

Key Features and Renovations

The soft opening showcases a slate of recent upgrades designed to enhance both convenience and community safety:

  • Enhanced Wi-Fi access
  • Online registration and payment options
  • Installation of a permanent backup generator, enabling the site to function as an emergency shelter during weather-related disasters

These improvements follow Fort Bend County’s partnership with CenterPoint Energy, which donated emergency generators to the Sports Hub and other facilities like the Landmark Community Center in Missouri City. The goal is clear: to keep these centers operational during hurricanes, derechos, and other severe weather events.

“We are committed to ensuring that our residents have access to safe, fully operational shelters during emergencies,” Judge George said in March when the generator installations were announced. “These efforts will strengthen our emergency response infrastructure and improve our ability to support residents during disasters.”

Inclusive Programming for All Abilities

One of the Hub’s most meaningful partnerships is with The Arc of Fort Bend, which hosts Special Olympics practices at the facility—ensuring that residents of all abilities have access to sports and recreation close to home.

What’s Still to Come

Though the soft opening signals a major milestone, the Sports Hub is still a work in progress. When complete, it will include:

  • Six indoor batting cages
  • Four full-sized basketball courts, convertible into eight volleyball courts
  • Sixteen indoor pickleball courts
  • Two lease spaces for sports medicine and nutrition services

The facility is available to rent for youth camps, clinics, tournaments, and other year-round events—cementing its role as both a competitive sports destination and a community cornerstone.

Background: A Strategic Investment in Pecan Grove

According to Fort Bend County Commissioners Court records, the County approved the acquisition of the Sports Hub property from Wadhwani Holdings, LLC in 2023 for just over $10.75 million, as part of a long-term vision to expand recreational infrastructure in Precinct 1. That investment was followed in 2024 by a $745,000 expansion project for parking, lighting, landscaping, and drainage.

With these developments, the Sports Hub joins a growing network of parks and community centers overseen by the County’s Parks & Recreation Department.
